A Follow-up and Some Interesting News

1. I can’t wait for National Parks to reopen after the quarantine.

2. I am in no hurry for my volunteer meetings to reopen after the quarantine.

3. These days, resigned hope is my default mood.

4. Have I ever told you there are times when I wish I had kept my big mouth shut?

The credit for this meme above can be found in Messimimi's comments at the bottom of the previous post if you want to know who and how this came about.

The young girl above is paddling down our river on April 8.  The water temps in the 40's and air temps in the 50's.  We just lost two members of the Kennedy family canoeing on the Chesapeake and not wearing dry suits or their Personal Floatation Devices. A mother and an 8-year-old son.  Their death was attributed to rough waves but also very cold water in the 40s.  Note where she is keeping her life jacket!

The more significant changes caused by this virus is that when you force mankind to remain indoors for significant periods of time, the world begins to slowly recover from its scars and pollution that we have wrought.

  • Mobs of monkeys are roaming the streets of Japan.
  • Venice's canals have become clear once again because silt is not being stirred up by traffic.  (One rumor is that dolphins have returned.  This was not true and photos in social media were dolphins swimming off the canals in Sardinia which is not an unusual phenomenon.)
  • Lions did sleep on the roadways at South Africa's Kruger national park because of the lack of traffic.
  • The air pollution in Europe, China and around the world has become less.  The countries with lots of asthma cases (China) can now see blue skies.
  • Elk have invaded Banff town as their tourist industry falls into great decline.  You can see it here as well.
  • The earth is actually vibrating less due to the lockdown.  Earth tremors can be more accurately measured closer to developed areas.
  • One thing that is not happening is that birds ARE NOT louder.  Just seems that was with the diminishing of noise pollution and people being forced to stay at home!

  1. Sometimes I think WE are the virus.

  2. I echo the above comment. The earth is trying to heal itself and it has given us humans a warning. Let's hope we remember.

I also read that this past month was the first March without a school mass shooting in 18 years.

  3. The earth is taking a break, but the simple fact is that there are too many of us, and now we are too good at preventing death, except maybe for people like that young woman.

  4. That girl is being very cheeky.

  5. Elk video, makes me smile, however...folks not practicing social distancing?...video date...2015. Evidently, looking at another elk video of the area, they are regular visitors much like the goats taking over a town in Wales. Google Elk poop on every sidewalk.
The lions sleeping on the street will give me nightmares at some point in my life. Neat photo, though.
I've read that some athletes train for Artic like expeditions by leaving the window open in the middle of winter. I'm guessing the paddle boarder is training for freezing her a$$ off.

  6. I had to smile at the hubris of that young woman. Don't all people that age believe they are invincible? Thanks for all the great links. :-)

  7. Glad there's less air pollution. But I kinda like the buzz of human activity.

  8. if nothing else good comes out of this, at least the earth got a little reprieve.

  9. I think youth is wasted on the young. I can imagine how cold that water is.

  10. Isn't there a Mark Twain quote about ignorance and confidence leading to success? That girl will be fine - if she doesn't freeze to death. Loved the photos of the lions!

    1. And it published as i was trying to say more. Anyway, the birds are not louder, but they were already plenty loud enough here, i love to listen to their chorus in the morning as i am waking up. That has not changed at all.

  13. I just love the synchronicity of all the animals in the world taking to the streets and invading the human world.

  14. It's been a tough time. Not sure it'll be better soon. So many people want to travel and that's how this virus spread. So many love cruises, too tight of quarters. Then there are the aircraft carriers and submarines, etc. Businesses have grown with people wanting their hair cut or nails and will they come back? Just one of the more uncertain times. I read that Wall Street will be back before Main Street. Scary thought for what that will mean for so many people, who now seem to think government can take care of everything-- only it can't.

Oh my! I don't know about your state, but in Pennsylvania it is the law to wear life-jackets, and to carry a whistle ....until April 30. (After April 30 you still need these but the life jacket doesn't have to be worn.) This is because the water is so cold you could not survive long. Even though we are semi-private and gated, we have the game commission wardens constantly coming in and checking (with binoculars even) constantly. The fines are large if you don't have these (or fishing licenses, etc). Plus, a wet suit would be more "fashionable" for that weather. But she is keeping her distance from others.... Andrea

  16. That is a bit stupid in those temperatures. Stay safe stay sane.

  17. Wow! Seems a bit cold to me to be on the river as she is — must really be hardy! I surely hope we respond to what nature is telling us about what humans beings are doing to the environment — that we alter our behavior.
