Things I Learned and Did Not Learn This Summer

I purchased a second hummingbird feeder so that the hummers would fight less and find that they prefer only one. I switch them and it makes no difference as they will still go to the preferred feeder. The feeders are identical. Hummm?

I learned when you buy tickets to an event at the Kennedy Center, it is not always a culturally accurate presentation and can be a political sham. (Explanation maybe in another post.) Anyway, the evenings are so worth going up there.

We once again missed the Dragonboat races but were down at the water the night before when eyes were being painted and tongues coated. Maybe I will learn to be better organized next year.

I learned that my husband will always have enormous ideas for projects!

I learned if you accidentally tear a turtle egg in the compost pile, you are responsible and it will change your kitchen for a few weeks.

I learned that when your daughter says the kids may be too busy to come down during the summer, at the last minute you will get at least two of them. What fun!

I also learned that leaving a teenager alone to bathe in your Jacuzzi can be a surprising experience for both of you...modesty notwithstanding.

Never too old to learn!

  3. I think you also maybe learned not to try to understand the tiny mind of a hummingbird.

  8. fun post. I guess you found a clutch and these were the survivors? we have two hummingbird feeders, one in the front and one in the back and they seem to use both.

  9. I've come back and read this post at lease three times. Did you make the kid clean the bubbles up? Where is the turtle egg?

    1. I guess I will write a post about the turtle soon when I find some time. I actually just walked away hoping all the bubbles would pop and either my grandson or my husband cleaned it or all the bubbles popped. All I had to doo was wipe up a bunch of left behind scum which was an easy task.

  10. I just noticed your hummingbird feeder looked red for the liquid. I hope that was just the illusion of the feeder as red dye is bad for them and not needed. We don't buy the solutions they sell but stick to sugar and water since our hummers get the insects they need.

    1. I did more research and find that Cornell also recommends not using a red dye since it is consumed in such a large amount to the size of the bird. So now I have to find a good sugar forumula.

    2. I use 1/4 C. sugar to 1 C. water for the ratio. I also make sure the water is safe. We have a filter and use it from that, heat 1/4 C. of water in the microwave, add the sugar, and then add the rest of the water. Make sure it's not too hot when you put it out. They don't like that :)
