Saving Life

Over 30 years ago, and I have written about this before, I used to send out research articles to agriculture scientists on "greenhouse gases" and "greenhouse warming." At that time, many of the articles said we had about 15-20 years to turn this situation around.  We were creating a warming of the planet by releasing fossil fuels that had been captured for millions of years.  That was back in 1989 and people who were busy with their lives ignored it. It was before the Internet became so easily available, mostly government and universities were beginning to get access to databases...not the common man.  Therefore, most people did not read these articles, besides they were boring.

Yesterday I was watching Fareed Zakaria's television show which appears twice on Sundays on CNN. (Avoiding the drumbeat of this divisive administration that CNN loves to pound.)  He manages to capture hugely important issues and condense them to five-minute reports, for those of us who missed the issue.  He has a truly global perspective which our tribal views may miss.

Yesterday Zakaria interviewed an author about a book written 30 years ago on climate change.  "The End of Nature," considered by some to be the first book on climate change.    This author now has a new book out titled "Falter."

Today is Earth Day...please honor it in some way that is environmental.

  1. I will monitor use of plastics and I won't use straws unless they are paper. Eager to read what others say.

    1. Granny Annie, I am doing exactly the same, except I forget to tell the waiter/waitress not to bring straws, but do not use them when they do.

  2. Climate change was real then, and it is now -- even more pressing if that is possible.

  3. I used to do Earth Day posts when I first started blogging. usually about plastics pollution and the damage it does. I use glass storage containers, choose products in glass containers when possible, take my own bags or refuse a bag for one or two items I can easily carry, etc.

  4. Fareed Zakaria Is probably the most knowledgeable correspondent on any network. He has been correct about our policies in the Middle East and he is right on climate change.

  5. We appear to be getting nowhere with the solutions!

  6. Well, I did spend the day outside appreciating the beauty of nature. I'll have posts.

  7. it is imperative that we take care of what we've been given, and i do try to reduce, reuse, and recycle as much as i can.

  8. And Rachel Carson was writing about critical issues with the environment in the 1950's that have yet to be fully addressed.
I enjoyed a day at the beach but I couldn't help worrying about the siege of red tide of last year. I'd like to enjoy nature again without having to be thinking "Tick Tock."

  9. Though of course it is about us and what we do, the bigger picture is of course fighting the deniers. Greta Thunberg is the lass of the moment, she seems to be inspiring a lot of young people, we have to back them. The fact that 30 years ago this message was around says a lot about laziness and complacency.

  10. I have reduced my use of plastics and bought a glass straw awhile back. I never buy plastic water bottles and we reuse as much as we can. Just making these few changes would make a difference if everybody in America would stop using single-use plastic bags, which are banned in my city. I watched Zakaria and was very impressed.

  11. Yes, Zaharia is quite knowledgeable. I recycle all I can. We carry cloth bags for groceries. Plastic straws no longer automatically provided here now. We’ve known for so long these concerns and done so little.

  13. Yes mam, I learned an awful lot. I always go into these things afraid. This time I just came out tired with a smile on my face.

  14. Good to be an environmental advocate.

I always liked Earth Day. I planted a spruce tree in 1986 when McD's gave them out with happy meals! Alas, someone who does not care about trees cut it down for a view out a window. I care alot about trees in particular. They may never be replaced with the new conditions.
Also my cousin who teaches had students find plastic particulates that are imbedded in lake fish tissues near her home in Vermont this year! People are eating it...
I have been paranoid about Ozone, Carbon Dioxide build-up, n Bee problems for decades. Mind blowing facts to ponder!

  15. Our Planet on Netflix is scary but so much of what is suggested to do would accomplish nothing, like straws. They need to realize on them that some is for handicapped people and not sure it would change anything major as most ocean pollution doesn't come from the US but Asia and probably cruise ships, etc. We don't know the history of this earth as to how much of this is cyclical but that documentary does cause a lot of sadness-- but then what'd we think survival of the fittest meant or evolution? I am all for doing what we can but some is just to make people feel better.

  16. I didn't mean Our Planet suggested that-- needed a comma. It's about wildlife and what is happening to their world.
