Lying Through the Lens

This is the view from my side of the river from my deck looking across the river. I lightened it a bit and sharpened it but did nothing else. I was trying to get a photo of our bunches of geese that were resting before take off. But they are too far away to hold the attention of the viewer.

This is the view that is falsified which makes it look much more rural. If a printing company took a magnifying glass to this they would see my edits, because I used shortcuts and was not careful. But to the untrained eye, I think the edits are hard to see and it makes it look as if I have no neighbors. What do you think?

  1. You have a nice view either way.

  2. What I often do is crop down to the subject, like the bank and the geese with your foreground. The main time I use cloning to screen something out, it's our Tucson sunsets where down the road is a big powerline (we live with such ugliness as a culture with our power poles above ground). I mostly want them gone for potential book covers for the time when there weren't powerlines. It's easiest when I enlarge the canvas to 200% and go back and forth for what looks right. Tedious work but for some sunsets, it's worth it.

  3. cool ... but also a little creepy that you can make things disappear so fast!

  4. I would have to look very hard to detect any editing. Quite an achievement!

  7. Amazing! How in the world did you make the neighbors disappear? Yes, now the photo is about the geese.

  8. This is one reason why seeing cannot always be believing any more.

  9. I must have an untrained eye because it looks like that house was never there.

  10. Interesting comparison. I'm not a photo expert, but the edited shot looks good to me. Wouldn't mind being out there floating gently in a row boat on a quiet warm afternoon. This is similar to the photo (without the ducks) I envisage when I relax in my way of meditation.

  14. Of course editing is a whole new angle on how to tell a fib in a photo, a bit scary. You did an excellent job on your photoshopping though ;)
