A Little Experiment

Imagine you are in a room of diverse people who are there to learn how to prioritize their goals, how to evaluate issues and how to reduce stress.  The instructor asks each person to close their eyes and to describe a scene (real or imagined) that is their favorite scene or would be a favorite situation if they could be there.  What would you describe?

We own 60 acres of wooded land 80 miles from home. There is a well and an outhouse. No running water. The cabin is a single 16x24 A-frame. If I could be anywhere it would be sitting under the overhang on the porch in front watching my trees grow and the birds feeding on the food I put out on the deck railing. If I am lucky, I might have a visit from a friendly bear or even see the red fox pair that seem to have set up housekeeping somewhere close. I might even see my pileated woodpeckers that frequent the stand of 40 foot poplars lining the drive into the cabin. The Eastern Phoebe had 4 eggs in the nest when I was up there last weekend. I feel bad as the nest is right outside of the only door and I disturbed her many times. A nest has been built outside of this door for many years. They must not mind too much or they would go somewhere else. It is here that I can feel a part of the universe more than in town where I spend most of my time. Here I can relax and think about things other than the daily grind.

  2. Tabor, I bet you know what I am going to say? I have come home to what I dreamed of for years.
My small home now almost 3 years old, sitting at the edge of over a 100 acres of woods. When ever I leave for an errand I can hardly wait to drive down my long gravel drive and see Miss Callie waiting for me...

  3. I'm a little limited now. Staying out of the sun is important as is walking little. So if you want me, I will be by the side of the bay watching the city go by from under a big hat. A picnic would be in the truck, and a good new book would be waiting next to me. Maybe two in case the book wasn't good after all. The sun would be out, and if I wanted I could drive up to the top of the Point and watch the whole would all around me. Oh, heaven.

  4. I would be on a private terrace with a beautiful pool in front of me and the sea beyond. I need to keep out of the sun so I would be draped in layers of kaftans and hat under a brolly...... books and magazines by my side and a long cool drink. Needless to say it is hot!!

  5. I used to kayak fresh water lakes. In my mind I'm sitting drifting for a few minutes soaking in the sun, the woods, and rocky beaches, ahhh!

  6. It's early morning in a park-like setting and I'm enjoying the solitude and watching the mist hover over the water.

  8. I'm pretty happy right where I am sitting at my desk in our Tucson home, working out a new idea for one of my manuscripts, the air is warm but not too hot. The quail are talking to each other out back.

If it had to be somewhere else, it'd be the Madison River in Montana, the sun is on my back, the river out in front of me and pelicans fly overhead while river rafters float downstream

  9. I would be in a smallish pool of almost warm water, in the middle of some very green woods with tall, old trees and wildflowers, and lots of rock (maybe even a small waterfall).

  10. I've done meditation for years and my favorite scene is going back to a time when I was ten years old.

I am sitting on my Mom's front porch in her cushioned redwood furniture reading from a box of books.

It is summer and the breeze is rustling the leaves of the maple trees. I can hear the rustling that is how quiet it is.

So far almost every answer has trees/water/reading involved.

  11. Wading thru the shallow water of Fave beach on a summer day without other people there- no strong winds, not too cold or hot- just Saunderlings, Pipers, n Gulls keeping me company, under a cloud spotted blue sky.

I've done that n found I hate when others are there because I feel restricted.

    Well water is so soothing...
Reading these makes me feel peaceful!

  14. I would be in a perfect little Craftsman cottage by the ocean, hearing the sounds of the waves crashing into shore. The sun is out, a lovely breeze is blowing and I have the best book ever written in my hands.....

    ::le sigh::

My fave scene would be seeing my elder daughter on my tummy, moments after she was born!!!

  22. My visualization for relaxation is usually the same -- a small boat floating on a small mountain lake of icy blue still water surrounded by a forest. Nature scenes, usually with water, are always key for me.

  23. The ocean at sunset with that same peachy glow that you spoke about above. The ocean image popped in my head before I could "think" of something else. I can hear the gulls and am watching the cleans slate of sand and the far off horizon.
