Did You Disappear?

Several people commented in posts and even commented on my blog comments on the recent two-day outage of Blogger...although Blogger did not admit they were out of whack for that long because you could read what had been published in a prior time.  I had been pretty busy away from the computer during that time and only noticed at the very end when I was trying to check my posts.

It was a little frustrating for me not being able to post anything or read anything new, but because I am easily distracted  I moved on to something else.

Some of you wrote that you felt as if you had been cut off from communication with an important side of the world.  I began to wonder if I would have felt the same if it had been a rainy or cold day where I was stuck at home with nothing to do.  If I had time to reflect, I am sure that I would have been a little panicked at not being able to get in touch with readers of my blog.  What if Blogger had gone down permanently?  I am sure they have back-up servers to return to a prior time...but what if?

Peruby has a disaster recovery plan idea which she wrote about.  I never thought about a back-up plan for a hobby, but that is an interesting thought.  How did you feel about all this?  Do you have a back-up plan?

  1. I have always felt blogging is something that won't be permanent. These things always change and someday it's likely to cost money which means it won't be as popular. When it went down, I was on the road; so only found out when a blog, that I had written to be posted one of those days, didn't show up. I was mostly mad at myself for not having saved it to my word ahead of time as I had liked one of my ideas in it (an analogy) which I wasn't sure I could duplicate. I then wished I had saved it elsewhere but fortunately it showed up

  2. I had a post disappear and assumed I had done something wrong. A back up is something I have not thought about before. I probably won't do it anyway because I'm lazy.

  3. I wrote at Peruby's site:
My primary blog is at Open Diary, a hive site. They began crashing with great regularity several years ago, so I began a backup/mirror blog at Blogger. I tried several other blogging sites first, and Blogger offered the best templates. Wordpress seems most reliable.

I continue to write first in word, even with the coding, then post in both blogs sites. I save on this computer and to an external hard drive. I've been one of those dogged journal writers since 1974....plus those teen aged angst years I'm not mentioning.

This last week, both Blogger and OD were down at the same time. Why do I keep both? I've found blogging families on both sites Many who have evolved into real friends.

Yup, gotta have a backup plan. :)

  4. We have two blogs. I used the "Back-up" blog when Blogger was down. The latter is called "an occasional daily blog!" Some people have up to five blogs. One can always print a blog on parchment if you want it to last for a few thousand years I suppose. One can't save it to outer space, because even satellites only last a few years, maybe a hundred...

I use google reader so could read most blogger posts, but couldn't comment on them. Everyone got hit with the like button that day. By the time I read blogs the second day, blogger was up and running again.

  6. I don't have a back up plan, and certainly need to do something about it, as I consider. First, I have found dear friends here and don't want to lose touch with them. Second, I have content here that I have no where else, and we need to keep it - so need it backed up.

    Pondering.

Was laughing out loud at the bloody post, so glad your husband is fine! :)

  7. I had this problem too. The comments on current post vanish...

But I have a backup (a copy) of all my posts, since the first. I click on the title of the post (the permalink) and so I can copy the posts with all the comments.

  8. I did not know there was a blogger issue. Just was aware that the layout of my blog changed completely. I thought I had lost my blog list and profile. Kept trying to restore and could not and then like magic everything was back to normal.
My special friends (like you) are so important to this aging lady who lives solo and 2 years ago chose to build a cottage at the edge of the woods. What would I do without you?
So hoping all continues the same while I am on this planet...

  9. I don't have a backup plan, some of my posts I have saved, but in the main, I think of them as conversation. And Rain is right, if they start charging many of us will quit I think.

  10. No back up plan - if blogger goes, so go I, out into the ether where all the ideas came from originally. I have saved photos and purchased song downloads and all my poems are saved in word but most posts are ephemeral...

  11. No...no back back up plan here! Ha!
    I just roughed it!
It was frustrating though but I am glad it is over for sure!!

  12. I just happened to hear read about the problem when I was seeking a solution to my line spacing problem.

I have a backup copy of each post (the one that's sent to my inbox when I hit publish), but I surely wouldn't want to recreate my blog!

For a long time, I've planned to have my blog printed. Guess it's time to do it.

Going over Peruby's site to see what she has to say.

  13. Last week was the busiest week of the school year for me, so I was almost grateful when it went down for 2 days. No pressure to post anything! I lost a couple of comments, but no posts disappeared.

A back-up plan? Read more books. Paint. Take photos. Get more exercise. Begin a quilt. Switch to Wordpress.

  14. I'm a bit like you, Tabor, - easily distracted..... there's always more to do online or when there is an outage I enjoy reading, stamp collecting, getting outside if the weather is ok....... never time to be bored.

  15. I didn't even notice. I guess I accept now that some blog days seem dead. Going to read about the back-up plan. I think I need one.

  16. Back up plan for blogging? I don't actually understand the premise.
Yes, I back up everything that is on computer, via Time Machine and via an external hard drive, so I don't really lose anything unless everything goes kaput or gets stolen.

As for not blogging, I was glad to hav an excuse to finish a book which had got neglected. Blogging can become a bit of a chore at times, so anything to help me get away from it temporarily can only be good.

About your last comment on my post: the child, now adult, is trying to come to terms with the emotional problems of her childhood.

  17. "...if it had been a rainy or cold day where I was stuck at home with nothing to do..."
All my Days Off in two Months have been rainy! Plus I live alone n work Nights n am on opposite schedules with everyone I know, so I was cut off from my only company.

When I have time I try to make Word files with comments- but there are so many I never catch up!

  18. The blogger outage could not have come at a better time for me. I was so busy with Ron's health concerns I did not have time to blog. However one day when I had about an hour to spare I found blogger down and was very frustrated at that moment.

  19. Disappear? Nope, I just went back to studying French. I did notice it, though.
