Review of Retirement

"Do not let yourself be bothered with the inconsequential. One only has so much time in this world, so devote it to the work and the people most important to you, to those you love and things that matter. One can waste half a lifetime with people one doesn't really like or doing things when one would be better off somewhere else." — Louis L'amour, Ride the River

And the above is why I retired.

But I still know how to waste time as well!

Haven't done this in years. I am still the anal retentive type and begin by sorting into containers by color and/or straight edges. 1,000 pieces...only 980 to go, but who's counting?

  1. Now surely you know that nothing we do in retirement is a "waste of time". Every project, fun or tedious, challenges our minds and keeps us healthy. We are stimulating our brains, not wasting our time -- right?

  2. One of my semi-retired friends does jigsaw puzzles in his spare time, and mounts and frames each one like a painting after finishing them. I wondered why someone would do this and then thought of his profession: a surgeon. Perhaps someone whose professional training robbed them of all leisure time (even time to sleep!) in their formative years, ends up thinking of time as the ultimate luxury. And people like to show off their luxuries. What better way to show off a surfeit of time than to mount it on your wall?

It reminds me of making beaded earrings and all the tubs and tackle boxes of beads that I had. I loved combing colors and see how they turned out. I never want to make another one though.

Joe and I have a saying,"when we lay around we get a lot done." It refers to how accomplished we feel when we spent time catching up, figuring out things and going with the flow. It doesn't happen if you're too busy.

  5. I love jigsaw puzzles and sort out the straight edge pieces first.

I don't think that anything you do that gives you pleasure is a waste of time. What is retirement good for if not to enjoy the things we didn't have time to do while employed?

  6. I do them like Darlene; or at least I used to. My current cats will not let me do a puzzle, as they seem to think that the pieces are for their own personal enjoyment!

  7. I always sore the edge pieces out first and build the frame. It has been along time since I did one. I put one together at the hospital when Pete was in for his stem cell.

  8. To enjoy yourself is not a waste of time but very good use of time.

    Enjoy!

Ahh, a good glass of wine and a jigsaw puzzle,... it is a forgotten pleasure. Thanks for reminding us to take some time and enjoy life.

  11. I remember my Mom having little plastic bowls on the dining room table as she sorted the colors. When it was time for Sunday dinner, she would stack the bowls, put them off to the side and throw a big table cloth over the puzzle. Made for some unsteady glasses of tea, but what a wonderful memory.

  14. I love these, and always have one on the go. I have just bought a special case, where I can do the jigsaw and cover it up carefully to free up the dining table.

I think it is the librarian in me, enjoying bringing order out of chaos! Such fun.
