Perspective

As most of my readers know, my chronic cough returned after only a 5-week respite. I did enjoy sleeping through the night and feeling free to go anywhere and talk to anyone. New meds may be reducing the cough, but since this started back in January 2020 and I have been on a multi-pack of various meds I am not keeping my hopes too high regarding this new regimen.  Well enough of that!

Fall is here.  I saw it coming in the angle of the morning light and then the day after Ida passed (and thankfully missed us) the weather turned to cool and dryer mornings.  Mid-day can get quite warm, but it sure feels like autumn.

The delicate skirts of Ida.

Above is our Verbena (Black Haw) with the flowers all gone and seed for the birds beginning to ripen. Soon they will turn dark bluish and the leaves will be the color of wine.

I have reached the age where I think often of the passage of time, my connections with others, my growing irrelevance, and how hard I have to work to stay healthy.  While my husband's allergy to mammal meat is on the wane, we still eat mostly fish and fowl.  We have tons of vegetables from the garden and fruit is readily (if not cheaply) available in the store.  Hubby has been told to cut back on sweets (originally by me) but now by the blood data.  I love dessert but can get by with a small piece after meals.  Hubby thinks that pies should be cut into quarters!

Salmon with mustard sauce on arugula.

Kaffir lime leaves from our tree for soups.  We even took a large bag to the local Thai restaurant.

A few kaffir limes from the tree after pruning.  Perfect for our seafood.

So many tomatoes that I now broil them! (Sorry for the blur.)

I also try to keep up a small bit of exercise with free weights and my elliptical work, about three times a week.  I should up it, but it is sooooo boring.

I do miss making a contribution to something or other.  While I do some volunteer work with master gardeners, it is on my own at home, and due to both COVID and my cough, I have little contact with others.  I see my grandkids and my children maybe once every other month.  Their lives are super busy, as they should be.  I might like to work with elementary school children, once everyone is vaccinated...if I am still living then!

My next post will be a perspective on being the recipient of a clean house, rather than cleaning it myself.

  1. Girl, those are some heavy weights you have going there!! I'm doing good with a few reps from 8 or 10 pounds. I'm impressed---and envious. Will try to up my game. :D

    1. I started years ago with 4 pounds and when the reps became to high I upped the weights. I now do 45 reps of various types and it really has improved my posture. I also use rather heavy ankle weights working while lying on the floor. My knees hurt less these days.

  2. Mine are feather weights in comparison. G agrees with your husband...deserts, pizza, and quiche should be quartered.
Nosily I ask, what do your chest exrays show? As an aside, I am now sitting up all night. Do I like it? No, but I like not coughing.

    1. I had chest x-ray which showed nothing. I had an MRI as well and it showed nothing. I also had those on my neck and head because I really have no chest congestion and the cough comes from my throat.

    2. We are off to a day and night at the Hotel Del Coronado for my birthday. I had nightmares about how I was going to sleep there. My cough comes from my throat too. A reaction to the meds. My thoughts are with you.

  4. I believe a cough has to have a source to be a cough. Imaging is one diagnostic tool. Chemistry going on. Somewhere in a lab, there is research on the cough reflex. Somebody somewhere knows. Prayers you find that doctor or else a celebrity reveals they have the same problem. It seems that gets things moving to help people.

  5. I spend a lot of time and effort trying to keep myself moving so I will be able to move. My five pound weights are enough for now. 12 pounds is a lot. Good for you.

  6. I agree that 12 pound weights is quite a lot, since I use 5 and 8 lbs max, and I haven't done any of them for a year now. I think my three-times-a-week yoga certainly helps. But as we get older, it's more and more work to stay fit. I do hope they find the source of your cough, and soon!

  7. My hope is the meds finally do some good. Grandma coughs all of the time, no one can tell her why, and she just goes on and lives her life around it. She says it's all she can do.

  8. Gosh, you must be so fed up with that cough. I do so hope your medical people find the source of it soon.

  9. Getting old seems to have more and more limitations-- something I hadn't realized until I got here for myself. Good luck with a solution to the cough. It seems chronic conditions are hardest for doctors to find answers.

  10. I hope your cough disappears. It’s wait and see time obviously.

This aging business and thoughts of mortality have made enjoyment of experiences more important for me. Living in the moments in nature keep me focussed on living rather than the alternative. We each find a way to handle it.

  11. Both my sister and a friend/co-worker have a cough doctors cannot figure out. Both are in their 70's and both were non smokers. It just seems kind of strange.

  12. Food looks delish! Sure wish you could have some respite from your cough. Wonder if it's become habituated somehow, but not sure how you end that, but might be worth exploring. I sometimes get a cough that seems to occur from a point on the left side at the back of my throat that will last a day or so. I'm not sure what prompts that but it eventually goes away. I also have periods of time when I cough for no reason I can discern that I've come to think may just be something in the air.

  13. I made a tomato pie, yesterday. It was really really good.

  14. Hi Tabor...my meals are very simple these days. I eat a lot of fresh fruit and raw nuts. I get to the stage often that I can't be bother cooking. I think I did enough through the years to last me a few lifetimes. Simple as simple as can be suits me fine nowadays.

    Take good care of yourself...

  15. That is a very delicious and healthy looking lunch. Yum! I'm also cutting back on my sugars because of my glucose levels. Sigh... part of aging, I guess.

  16. Sorry to hear the cough has returned. That must be so awful for you. Your garden sounds like a market garden. Those meals look scrumptious.

  17. I am sorry to learn your cough is back. Bless your heart. Those little Kaffir limes look like small versions of what we call horse apples. Have you heard of them?

  18. By the way, my husband has a chronic cough too. He is seeing an ENT who recommended the neti nose rinse 3 times a day. I'm not seeing it do much good. I hope you find a cure for yours.
