Actually I did not eat too much. Just about 2 tablespoons of EVERYTING...except I did have a normal serving of dessert and about three and half glasses of wine (over the fours hours of prep-cooking at daughter's house.) But I feel good this morning. Here is part of my post TG breakfast.
Picked a week ago (early) from this overloaded tree in the photo directly below and this larger not so overloaded tree in the next photo.
These persimmons cannot be eaten until they are perfectly ripe and so we put them in brown paper bags in the refrigerator and then bring them out one bag at a time to ripen on the kitchen counter and it works about 80% of the time.
Below the second of two harvests. Fortunately for us the raccoons and squirrels have not yet found the tree and if we can continue picking them before they are ripe, we may get most of this harvest each year!
Regarding taste question below: The texture is custardy or a gelatin texture, sweet not tart, and ours have no seeds.
Lovely colors, I've never eaten a persimmon. Do they taste as good as they look?
ReplyDeleteTwo tablespoons? Wow, that's discipline. I also didn't feel I ate too much but definitely had more than that of the dressing which is a once a year thing. I make mine in the turkey and had to use mostly regular bread as I do not think gluten free would work. It gets gummy even without an excuse.
ReplyDeleteI got a surprise when I went to buy breadcrumbs to make the dressing as there were none down here without seasonings-- and with my sensitivity these days to msg, I don't risk spices where they say natural spices or some such term that doesn't identify what they contain. Anyway I made my own breadcrumbs several days ahead and spiced them with what I knew-- yummy. Frankly dressing is my favorite part of the turkey dinner.
I didn't particularly feel I overate but I didn't eat a meal later either (ours was about 1 pm). The gluten though made me feel weighted down-- and yes, I am going to have some for leftovers again today-- no resistance at all :)
Just looking at a big meal fills me up. Though, it's so easy to overindulge on sweets and favorites that appear just once a year on the typical plate. Love your abundance of persimmons. Now that I don't have access to them, I surely miss them.
ReplyDeleteA ripe persimmon is a delight! Good for you that you get most of them.
ReplyDeleteI love persimmons. How lucky you are to have a tree. People here grow the hard, flat kind, but I prefer the pointy squishy ones, best eaten over the sink and in privacy!
ReplyDeleteMy aunt used to make persimmon cookies, but I've never eaten one all by itself. Interesting.
ReplyDeletea friend of mine had a persimmon tree and she would give some to me now and then. I had never eaten one. wait until it is completely mushy, she told me. I found they were good with vanilla ice cream.
ReplyDeleteI have never tasted persimmons. I guess I need to remedy that.
ReplyDeleteI did not overeat the main meal, but dessert was my downfall.
Boy, do they look good. Don't worry, I more than made up for your shortcomings. I ate MUCH more than I should have!
ReplyDeleteTwo tablespoons?! I now don't know whether I think more or less highly of you. ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm mostly still eating the remaining Cran-Apple Pie I made.
ReplyDeleteI'm a pathetically slow eater, but managed mostly turkey, squash, n sweet potatoes at dinner. Also I made cranberry sauce, which I always eat with poultry anyhow.
Good system with your tree produce.
Are there two kinds of persimmons.. or is it just the difference between perfectly ripe and not? I have bitten into their fruit and felt like I ate a bite of antiperspirant. I've also since been convinced to try some that was perfectly fruity.
ReplyDeleteBut really.. two tablespoons? I would be keeping ladles on the table top and calling them table spoons.
I only had a tablespoon or two of everything, too, but unfortunately, there were too many things, and I'm still stuffed! Would you believe I've never eaten a persimmon?
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother's favorite fruit.
ReplyDeleteIt is very difficult to go back to persimmons once you have bitten into one at the wrong time. However I was persistent and gave them another chance and do love them when they are right.
ReplyDeleteI too managed to watch the contents of my plate, taking only small portions and managed to get through without taking any backward steps from my weight loss success. I'll pat your back while you pat mine:)
I did taste some persimmons at our neighborhood Thanksgiving feast but I was more interested in pie. I wait all year for my friend Jayn's mock mince meat pie. I also love gravy poured over everything except the pie.
ReplyDeleteVery beautiful persimmons! They look delicious and I'm glad you had two harvests!
