I doubt it is just me, but I have suddenly been hit with spam comments on a daily basis to both of my blogs. I have my blog set up where I do not require those posting comments to go through that annoying word verification window that is set up to prevent spam robots from leaving comments. I hate this gatekeeper because it also prevents real people from commenting on others' blogs. I also have no restrictions on who can comment on my posts...no registration, etc. I do have an approval requirement that kicks in on comments to my posts that are over 7 days old and this is where the spam comments are being posted.
I mark these comments as spam so they never get published. They are drug ads mostly...some clothing ads. All of them annoying and clearly from non-English sources due to the bad grammar.
I do not want to implement that nasty word verification window that Blogger has created which is so hard to read that I sometimes try three times to get the code right when trying to place a comment on another blog. After that, if I still have no success I just don't comment on the blog. Most readers refuse to use the word verification at all.
At any rate, here is hoping we soon get a much reduce diet of that canned meat, SPAM!
I only follow one blog that still has word verification. That blog friend has very few commenters and I continue to comment, though it is very difficult getting the right verification the first couple of tries. I know that is why her other followers have stopped commenting. Thankfully (knock on wood) I have very few spammers even though my blog does allow anonymous comments. Hope you don't have to resort to the word verification.
ReplyDeleteI hate those word thngeys. I don't use it. It is such a hassle.
ReplyDeleteBut I do know what you mean about the spam ads. I get those on my gmail!

I have noticed that spam is no longer being automatically filtered into a file that I can just delete but being sent to a 'for moderation' spot. Do robots really send spam? I have had one or two quite scary little comments.
ReplyDeleteI have my settings set similarly to yours - the seven days, no word verification - and I trap most of the span in the spam section and delete it easily. I hate those eye test verifications. I'm with you. I'll attempt it twice, maybe three times if I really love the blogger, but that's all.
ReplyDeleteBoy, I got a long one yesterday. Yup, can't do the word and number things. Both G and I tried to do one yesterday and ended up giving up. My settings are like yours, and I plan on keeping them that way.
ReplyDeleteI can't get those wordy things to work either. I have not been able to comment on more than one blog I like, Katiekono for one.
ReplyDeleteSo far I have been commenting on blogs that have word verification but I can anticipate a time when I won't. These word verifications now have numbers and are getting harder and harder for me to read.
ReplyDeleteI get a lot of spam and have to use comment approval.
ReplyDeleteJMHO : I comment on sites with the comment approval Hattie uses. It’s very polite and user friendly. It may stop exchange between responses as often on your site we will refer to what someone else has said. We all recognize SPAM for what it is and read past it, but for Pete’s sake don’t start wiping out bad grammar. That’s just how I talk. Don’t worry, Tabor, be happy!!
ReplyDeleteI have my email set up so that all of those spam comments go straight to Junk. Any legit comment gets picked up on the Blogger Dashboard for moderation.
ReplyDeleteWord verification is awful.
I like the title and the last sentence.(laugh)
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks to your posting I checked my settings and realized that I had set up the word verification without knowing. Now I picked up "No" box so that everyone easily give me a comment.
I get them by the dozens every day.. mostly on older posts, as you stated but often on current ones. Blogger catches all of them though and flags them as such. I just need to confirm that they're spam by deleting them. They never see the light of day so it really doesn't bother me. It's much quicker to select all and delete than it is for individuals to wrestle with word verification.
ReplyDeleteOh, how I hate word verification. The Wordpress spam filter is pretty good - even stopping genuine comments at times, that I can then go in and approve.
ReplyDeleteMy spam filter is pretty good - so far - but I know there are some blogs where I just cannot seem to read the letters right. Comments are so precious, I hope your problems get sorted out.
ReplyDeleteI have been having some spam get through lately, too, but in checking my comment controls, I see that a lot is being blocked. I don't want to put the word verification back on either. I encounter it on one blog I read, and usually I just give up after two tries.
ReplyDeleteI hope your spam issue dissipates soon and it is just a temporary issue.
ReplyDeleteI am not entirely certain what instigates the spam. Some word in a post, I suppose or just random.
I usually don't mind the word verification. I usually only have to go it once, so my eyes must be abstract or something. Or my mind is.
I might take some time and read up on this to see what little tricks we might be able to do (with spam and word verification).
Good luck!
I took off the Anonymous option and that cut out 99% of the spam that used to get through.
ReplyDeleteI think spam causes cancer!
ReplyDeleteI have the "no anonymous" n it seems to work well for spam. I think in 7 years I've had less than 10 spam comments that way.
ReplyDeleteI detest the new word ver so hard to get right!
