Bah? Is there a bug humming?

Still sitting here waiting for the departure of this cold.  It is a moving target.  Fever and scratchy throat and malaise have given way to chest congestion, cough, runny nose and grumpiness   Taking various PM drugs to sleep, but decided to try without last night and now realize that getting about 4 hours of sleep does not put me in the best mood.  (Don't you just hate when bloggers whine about their winter colds?)

Speaking of wine, even that leaves a bad taste in my mouth.  I seem to be able to eat cookies and cupcakes rather easily, though.  And Lindt chocolate truffles go down without a whimper.  I am living in stretch pants this week.

I have finished my Holiday newsletter and will print up a batch and distribute them to one and all who might scan them before tossing them in the trash.  There are only so many news notes on travels and photos of darling grandchildren and brags about adult children that my friends and relatives are able to endure before pouring more bourbon in the eggnog and watching a rerun of Miracle on 34th Street, or National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation or the Muppet Christmas Carol while wrapping some odd shaped item that was on sale and will find its way into the back of a relative's crowded closet.

Yes, I am grumpy.  I am heading back up to those darling grandchildren to babysit once again this weekend...unless I find my illness does not go away.  Then it will be up hubby to hold up my end.  It is only the baby that needs to be watched as all four other members of the family have different social obligations on Saturday.  They have full calendars most days.  Hope the baby can keep up!  Below is the command center that was recently installed.

I have finished much of my holiday shopping for them, but it is a bit of a challenge.  Just a photo or two of my granddaughters room is an example of holiday shopping headaches for those who are grandparents to over-privileged children.  (For the longest time I shared a bedroom with my brother AND sister until I was a teenager!)

Yes it does look like someone threw up a strawberry milkshake in here and one can get a headache if staying too long!

Oh well, I do not want you to think that these over-privileged children are spoiled.  They do their chores somewhat faithfully and seem to get along with each other phenomenally well.  I am blessed and will be in a better mood to realize that when this damn cold departs!

  2. Ah, go ahead and whine away; you are truly entitled!
My mother's recipe for all colds and flu symptoms:
Hot water, slices of lemon and orange, a couple of teaspoons of local honey. Drink and drink until you feel better.

  3. I know you know this, but I will remind you that sugary treats diminish the immune system. That being said, if wine and chocolate make it better, wine and chocolate to your heart's content! Hope you are feeling better so you can enjoy those lovely grandchildren!

  4. There isn't much point to being sick if you can't whine about it.

  5. I've heard of quite a few people with a really nasty bronchitis; so take care.

  6. Yep, that's a typical little girl's room nowadays for those who can afford it. It'll pass. :) My youngest is waiting patiently for us to paint her room.

    Get well soon!

  12. I was sickly the last three days of my only week off for another year, n worked all week with a head-ache n sinus infection. You know, when it feels like the side of your face got hit with brick, no air will go in your nose, n you get blobs of dried blood when blowing your nose...
But I didn't mention it like that on my blog!
Turkey soup did make me feel alot better before sleep today. I bought some Lindt dark truffles tp eat today too. Guess the extra calories are needed for the stress.

I hope you aren't getting as grumpy as I am lately! I'm out of present money n not half done with the grandkids yet-

If your Pink little Lady can't scare away the Flu Blues I wish the best snooze for yous!

    Feel well very soon!

  13. I love the command center. I'm really glad I don't have to be "in charge" of young kids today. Being the occasional grandkid entertainer is just lovely.
    Hope you feel better soon.

  14. To snatch a quote from "Steel Magnolias" - "It looks like her room was hosed down with Pepto Bismol" LOL!

I hate it when I cough so much I can't sleep and I hate the headaches that medicine won't take care of.

I had a cough a week or so ago that made my sides hurt for days. UGH!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

  15. I am so sorry that you are still suffering. Your complaints are just fine. You are wonderful. You can always get her a book that her parents can read to her like LM MOntgomery's "The Little Princess" Or a little Kipling.

  16. My best recommendations for helping yourself through a cold are steaming hot showers and very spicy foods. Both make you sweat and both make you bring up the guck. I particularly recommend getting a green curry chicken from a good Thai restaurant. It always makes me feel better (the endorphin rush from the spice helps.)

  17. Ugh. Hate that kind of malaise.
And I, too, have type A granddaughters with full calendars. I have learned to be the lazy grandparent that they can push around. I cook and watch kids' programs with them, mostly. Not into mentoring or providing them with legends of their dear old grandmother. Not a crafty person. No quilts or little garments hand made by me. Although I'm always very nice to them and never fail to bring presents and will even bake cookies sometimes.
But even at that I am grateful to have my own place to retreat to. They all live in Seattle and we have a condo that we stay in when we visit. It's wonderful to duck out when the bedtime follies commence.
My other grandkids' family is a lot easier going, more like me. A little less busy and not quite so affluent. The kids are younger, though, and I expect that things will tighten up in that household, too.
With four grandkids, I believe in pacing myself, because I want to stay in the picture instead of getting burned out. The other grandma of my grandson, for instance, looked after him for three days without a break and flipped out and gave him a good spanking. She felt horribly guilty. I want to avoid that!
There isn't much out there about how to be a grandma, is there. Just stereotypes.
    Anyway, get better soon.

  19. Relate to much you share. I am one also who never had her own room
as it was shared with brother and sister. Also the command center
    looks like my daughter's.
Pleased my two little ones and even the older ones now get books
from grandma that she orders from Amazon.
    Get Well...

  20. Being limited on what I can take due to all my prescription drugs, I have found Benedryl the best for cold relief and it helps with sleep.

Queen Anne's Dark Chocolate Covered cherries also go down without a whimper:)
