Distinguished Looking---NOT!

I stopped dying my hair in December of this year. I saw no point in trying to look younger than I am since I no longer worked in an office. My real hair color is a very dark brown but in anticipation of the grow-out I began highlighting it last fall. The dark brown and gray can be seen in the top and back but the sides and front still have the blond highlight thing going on.

My hair grows fast, but this seems to be taking forever! I was hoping I wouldn't look this way on the April cruise but my hair stylist doesn't think the brown will be gone by then unless I cut my hair very short.

The good thing is that I will no longer be paying to have my hair dyed or dying it myself in between times in the future...what a pain!

Why in this Western culture are men considered distinguished with gray hair and women are thought of as cronish or witchy?

  1. Why?

Well, you see.....it has to do with the rich doin' what the poor can not do.

Two-hundred years ago the poor died young (for the most part) before they could produce white/gray hair sooooooooooo the rich bought expensive powered wigs.

When the poor had to labor in the sun and became tan, the rich wanted to be lilly white.

When the poor went into factories from morn till dusk the rich decided that a dark tan was the thing to have.

There are many other such examples.

Human CULTure is most ill, most times, indeed.

    Stay on groovin' safari,

  2. Hair dyeing is still an unknown experience for me. I've never considered dyeing my hair, and have been very lucky so far with only stray grays. I don't think I'd like the work involved in keeping it coloured but neither will I like the gray when it shows up in earnest. I admire your decision to let it grow out.

  3. That's a lot of hair. Take one section in your hand, that is about all the hair I have on my head. I can see why you would grow tired of coloring it. I get tired of just doing my few strands.

    Sigh.

  4. Ah -- to have hair again instead of fuzz that is watered by Rogaine.

  5. Okay, you all are making feel guilty for dwelling on something so silly. Just leave it to bloggers to get it right.

  6. I think grey on women looks beautiful! Color or not...it's what's on the inside that counts. :)

  7. I'll be dying mine until it's all grey. Even short I don't like it on me. I thought yours looked more highlighted than grey.

    I'm a type A too. ;)

  8. How very brave and daring of you to publish a photo of your roots!

I am dealing with trying to dye my own roots right now...and asking myself the same question that you did at the end of your post...

Someday we women will get to the root of it all....
    (sorry, I couldn't resist!)

It looks blondish and streaked. I like it but if you had dark brown hair maybe it's hard to get used to. I see so many young people with obvious streaks (sometimes in primary colors) so I figure it's okay to have a few streaked colors. I don't mind the gray coming in but I dislike that in places (near my temples and real white streak) where I'm going white it looks like I'm going bald. I touch up my bangs to try to blend it in. I would never be able to keep up hair dying so I have to accept it.

  10. i keep my roots touched up each month and about 2 times a year get highlights. i am graying heavily on the top and sides, especially around my face. no gray in back so i would be a 2 tone, for sure. as long as i have a husband with 8-10 gray hairs in his head i will dye mine! i think i look about 10 years older if i don't. since i have great fun with my hairdresser it is a pleasant experience. in 90 mins i am out of there with a clean, colored, and styled head of hair and in a great mood.

if you want to let your gray grow in, i wonder if your hairdresser could use a gray color tone on yours so it would all blend in as the natural gray roots come back in?

  11. I always looked forward to "nature's highlights" and realised I had got them one day when we were doing a colouring afternoon in the childrens library. I reached for the yellow for the hair in my self portrait....and a colleague handed me the grey!!

I eenjoyed the gradual change, more than can be said for my jowly jaw line!
