New Silhouettes

When you move into a new house you find your budget is pretty much depleted.  So, sometimes you put off getting things like drapes or window coverings until you have the money.  My husband has been adamant about not having window coverings in our bedroom.  I have been pushing for them, as I like the coziness of closing off the night, the lack of my neighbors garage light shining in my face, the fact that I can dress and undress in the bedroom, and the way they can reduce heat/cold exchange.

We have lived in this house for six years now. (Oh my.)  AND I finally got my bedroom window coverings last week.  I am not a drape person and so I went with the clean lines of Roman shades. Below you can see why hubby hates to cut off the view of the river.

But there was an interesting aspect of these drapes I had not expected.  They even play nicely against the sunset.  On the window ledge are silhouettes of bottles that I collected off of a reef while living in the South Pacific decades ago.  They are probably hospital medicine bottles with one ink bottle (the largest) from a Japanese hospital that was there in the 1900s.

I am now a happy camper.

  1. Congrats on your new window coverings. We got new blinds several years ago --and love them. They are dark brown --and can make the room dark when you want it dark. AND--you can open them totally up in the daytime for light and views... I love mine too. Glad you finally got some.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  2. Gorgeous view of the river and I love your blinds. I like them way better than drapes. The shadows of the bottles are like memories of themselves while the blinds are closed.

  3. I love your window covering selection. I'm also no fan of draperies.

  4. I use that kind of blind because I want the windows totally open during the day, don't care much for drapes and with cats, especially a playful young one, I like having no blind cords-- just shove them up and the whole window is gloriously open. Nice view you have

  5. I have very few window covering in my house, but I do have shades in the bedrooms and in the family room where we sit on long dark winter nights. As we move into longer daylight, the shades will stay up. I hate shutting out the light.
    Good choice for your windows!

  6. I'm not a fan of drapes either. We have white wood blinds in our bedroom and plantation shutters on other windows. Love your Roman shades!

  7. What a beautiful choice of window coverings. I am trying to figure out what I want in my bedroom now also. I have a great view (of the lake.. and of the sunrise) and would love to take advantage of that. I do like the idea of the blinds but one of the windows is actually a sliding patio door. I wonder if that's too large an area for roman shades. Thoughts?

  8. Lovely! And no rule says they have to stay down once you've gotten dressed or whatever it was you were doing when you needed them down. They go both ways.

  11. Given the choice, I'd choose no window coverings but it's not always possible and my next best choice are blinds. Reminds me I need to make roman blinds for my living area before winter but won't have much time at home in which to make them. I like yours!

  12. The only time Ron wanted drapes closed was when he was working crossword puzzles and the sun was in his eyes. Otherwise he could have lived in a glass house. I am a bit more modest than that.

  13. Dear Superwoman, I'm just home and slightly caught up with you. You did what? You lifted what? Yes, I am shaking my head your way about all the aches and pains. After that trip south where I couldn't stand the heat, I also didn't have one pain or ache. Home now, I can point at each one. LOL

Volunteers are to be cherished. Someone at that museum needs a crash course in volunteer treatment.

Yes three, they still get dressed up at least once a week. G looks awfully good in his penguin outfit, and I hide nicely behind him.

  14. I have never heard of bedrooms without window coverings although I can see not wanting to obstruct that view.

  15. I do not like window coverings and in my last homes had shutters that I could swing back. This home was too small and I put up blinds I do not like but being isolated wanted something really closed at night. My son visiting does not like them "with this wonderful view you need nothing at the windows." After he returns to Thailand I may look for sheer shades to pull for privacy (want to be able to see through them) and leave open when all of family is visiting.
    I like your choice...

  16. I don't understand why window coverings would be a problem. Can't they all be either raised or slid aside, so that a view can still be had and you can enjoy a restful night when there is no need of a view? In any case, I like the shadow effect.

  18. Yes, that IS a nice view!

We're not draperies people either - there are none in my house. We opted for 3 1/2 inch plantation shutters, though we didn't put any on the back of our house except for in the master bath room. (No houses behind us.)

I can relate to you and your husband's choices. I like a view, but I don't like the light of the neighborhood or the moon at night while sleeping.

Your Silhouettes are attractive. I hope you'll both enjoy them.

  20. i can't imagine no coverings on the bedroom windows. i couldn't do that. i'd be hanging up old blankets or sheets before i'd go without.

  21. What a gorgeous view of the river!
Yes, the drapes play beautifully against the sunset.
