The Boynton Beach Bereavement Club (2005)

We had to leave the apartment for a dinner out and a movie last night since the managment told us the carpet cleaners were 'on the way" and had been delayed by a clean-up of a broken pipe. (They weren't and didn't! That is another story.)

Anyway we saw a movie that I had been hoping to catch sometime this month. Reviews, backgrounder and info can be found at Ronni's Guest Blogger entry at Times Goes By . Guest blogger did an extensive review of the movie, Boynton Beach Bereavement Club, which is about elders in a retirement community in Florida.

Anyway, the movie was very interesting in many ways but not all that compelling. The actors were all top flight folks and the dialogue was not all that bad although some of the jokes were predictable. The whole theme was about loneliness and love and in some cases sex among the elderly. It was pretty lite fare considering the lives of people in a retirement community are not that shallow. You won't see much of the younger family members either.

It is refreshing to see natural wrinkles and sags and real people on the big screen and maybe this will be the beginning of more movies like that.

I did find it painful to watch the actors who had filled their lips with collagen and tightened their faces so that they looked like perpetually smiling mannikins. The actors who had not were much more interesting to watch.

As an aside, I read an article recently which stated that Jane Fonda and Sally Fields had made a pact to not have plastic surgery.

Well, enough of this stupid blogging.

  1. I can believe that Sally Field has never had plastic surgery, but Jane Fonda? No way. At about 65 she looks too good for that to be so. :) Not that there is anything wrong with good but subtle plastic surgery.

Thanks for the movie review. I don't think I want to see it. Sounds kind of sad.

Speaking of Sally Field, she is outstanding in the new TV show drama, "Brothers and Sisters". I watched the first episode this week and I liked it.

  2. I used to work at a place that manufactured the "Jane Fonda stepper" and she sent her photo back to be airbrushed more than 16 times. Maybe she needed to since she never had any plastic surgery. Oh, and that was fifteen years ago.

    Here is that photo:

Plastic surgery is like the new anorexia. People who get obsessed with it actually think they look good.

I look forward to seeing this movie.

    Chancy

I saw Boynton Beach Club last winter in Florida and did not find it sad. In fact there were a number of things to laugh about.

It has started playing here in New England and I do plan to see it again.

Glad you mentioned the TV show "Brothers and Sisters", didn't see it the first time it was on but now that you recommend it, I'll make a point of watching this week.

I got mad at Catherine Deneuve when she had something done to her mouth! Probably the result of some surgery gone bad. She can't smile properly any more, her mouth looks frozen. Why couldn't she accept gracious wrinkling. Now she can't play young lovers any more and neither can she be a grandma in movies. What a waste...
